ENGLISH 101 - Basic Requirements

Here are THREE REQUIREMENTS to which you must absolutely adhere:

  1. You MUST have your textbook on THE THIRD DAY. This gives you two full days in which to get it. That does not mean that you PURCHASE it on the third day., but that you have it by the previous day to prepare for the third day. Call the bookstore for hours: 222 7066

  2. You are allowed TWO ABSENCES. On the third, you will have to withdraw. Please understand that two absences in this term equal FIVE in the regular term.

  3. TWO TARDIES = one absence, so anything which totals three absences will require you to withdraw. Please understand that if you are late, not only do you miss material, but you are also distracting to the other students.

THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION TO THE TARDY POLICY: in case of bad weather, reasonable lateness will be accepted and will not count against you. Do not drive recklessly in snowy and icy weather to be on time, but do try to be here as soon as possible.

IF CLASS IS CANCELLED: either by me or by the college (for bad weather), continue following the assignment schedule and return to class with ALL the material due by the return date. If I have any emergency or illness, I will try to contact all of you.

PLEASE NOTE: if I do not come to class by 9:30, you are free to leave. Most likely if something happens, a colleague or someone from the English Department will have a note on the door or come in to make an announcement and to take attendance. If an essay was due that day, you will probably be asked to write it in class as scheduled. Again, keep up with the work as it is scheduled. We do not fall behind because of a closing.

A FINAL REMINDER: because of our intense schedule, it is absolutely necessary that you be in class, that you be on time, that you do not ask to leave early, and that you have all of your work prepared. PLEASE ALSO TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES AND BEEPERS.

DAILY WORK: expect at least 2-3 hours of home assignments for each class.

We will take a brief break daily—to be explained on first day.

I trust that if you do your part, as I will do mine, you will find this a profitable semester.
