           English 102 - Grading Standards

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

NOTE: You must have the text for the THIRD EVENING’S ASSIGNMENT, and you must be prepared.
If not, the class will be counted as an absence.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TEXT, SEE ME FOR AN EXPLANATION.

1. In most cases, your third absence will result in withdrawal from the course.
    Phone the English office only if you are absent TWO CLASSES in a row.

2. Two latenesses = one absence. Class begins promptly; you must be on time.

GRADING RATIOS

NOTE: the following values will change from time to time; consult the sheet distributed on the first evening.

  1. Five exam/essays as follows (80% of entire grade):

SSI           =  10%

SSII          =  12%

SSIII         =  13%

Poetry I     =  15%

Poetry II    =  20%

Drama       =  30%

  1. Quizzes = 10%

                        Oedipus        = 25%

                        Hamlet 1.     =  10%

                        Hamlet 2.     =  15%

                        Hamlet 3.     =  15%

                        Salesman 1.  =  15%

                        Salesman 2.  =  20%

  1. Attendance  =  5%                 Participation = 5%

PLEASE NOTE: Because we have only one drama exam, the quizzes which we will have on drama are essential; one absent quiz is allowed if you have no more than two absences before that absence. Otherwise, all quiz absences will be given a grade of zero. In other words, you cannot "opt out" of the quizzes.

ABSENCES: you are permitted an absence from one of the first four essays, for which there will be no penalty, but you cannot miss # 5, Drama. An additional absence from one of the others, or for # 5, will result in a zero for that item. This is not to be confused with "dropping the lowest score" (which is not my policy); rather, it is to allow for an emergency--illness, accident, etc. Unfortunately, we have no provisions for make-ups.

FINALLY,  I do not give Incompletes, and in those rare cases, you must supply official documentation about your situation.
